Bergen Community College President G. Jeremiah Ryan
Bergen Community College President G. Jeremiah Ryan and his wife, Gail Ryan, have donated $25,000 of their own money to establish the "Civic Engagement Fund at Bergen." The College's chairman of the Board of Trustees, Stephen J. Moses, announced the gift at a gathering of state, county, local and College officials and business leaders on Friday, February 29, 2008 at the Stony Hill Inn, Hackensack. The gathering - "Bergen's Fifth Friday Forum," presents an opportunity for officials and business leaders to meet and discuss topics pertaining to the College and Bergen County.
The Civic Engagement Fund will facilitate efforts between civic leaders and the College, including: encouraging Bergen's students to serve their community through service learning; supporting the Fifth Friday Forum and Suburban Policy Center; providing assistance to faculty performing civic-related research; and promoting the College as a venue for the discussion of national, state and local issues.
Chairman Moses praised President Ryan's work as Bergen's top administrator. "We hired Dr. Ryan to be a strong, no-nonsense academic leader and to aggressively advance the College in the community," Chairman Moses said. "He is delivering on both counts. Dr. Ryan is also willing to match his toil with treasure - this fund will encourage our students to be active in their communities."
President Ryan said the gift is a token to continue advances the College has made regarding civic engagement. "I speak about civic engagement as the hallmark of my presidency," President Ryan said. "I believe this gift will help further my commitment and enhance the College's ability to achieve my goals."
President Ryan joined the College in July 2007. Previously, he served as senior vice president of the Alman Group, Westfield, president and chief executive officer of Raritan Valley Community College, Somerville, and president and chief executive officer of Quincy College, Massachusetts. The president is a graduate of Hamilton College (A.B.), Stanford University (M.A.), the State University at Albany (M.S.) and Nova Southeastern University (Ed.D.).
