Sheriff McGuire's gift to a blind child – Sheriff for the Day

Sheriff Leo McGuire appointed 11 year old Anthony Gilio 'Sheriff for the Day' on Friday, March 14th. Accompanied by his parents, Virginia and Anthony, his sister and grandmother, this stalwart young man started out the morning with breakfast with the Sheriff.

From there he was driven in a Sheriff's car to Kiddie Kandids in Paramus where he posed, in uniform, for memorable pictures. He was then whisked to Foshini Park in Hackensack where Chief Bob Amarante of the Mounted Deputy Sheriff's Unit was waiting for him with JC, his palomino. With Bob was Terri Martino, a Certified Handicap Riding Instructor from Pony Palace in Mahwah.

JC was equipped with a special saddle designed to facilitate young children's riding. Chief Bob, Terri and Sheriff Officer Amy Mehnert walked Anthony and JC up and down the paths of Foshini Park. The smile on this blind, cancer ridden child was worth every effort. Sheriff McGuire made it happen; Sgt. John Calabrese, Officer Mehnert, Chief Amarante and Terri Martino assisted.

Anthony has been an avid wrestler and although blind, placed 6th in the Bantam Heavyweight wrestling matches. He also was honored for his proficiency in Braille literacy reading. His certificate read: "Certificate of Achievement as a Braille Literacy Leader; in recognition of your use of Braille for the attainment of education, independence, intellectual freedom, and equal opportunity; October 25, 2004," and the signatures of Vito DeSantis, executive director of the New Jersey Commission, and Library Director Demson.

His wrestling feats reminded me of David DeNotaris, blind almost from birth, World Power Lifting Champion and a motivational speaker. I hadn't been in touch with David for a couple of years, e-mailed him with an immediate response. He is now living in Hershey, PA with his family, having accepted the job as Director for the Pennsylvania State Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services in Harrisburg where he has been for 6 months.

As the cars left Foshini Park, one could hear the loudspeakers extolling Anthony Gilio, a happy Sheriff.

Say a prayer for Anthony this week; he undergoes an operation on a cancer that has appeared in his leg on Wednesday. I know he touched the lives of all of us present. Thank you Sheriff McGuire!
