Katz Gluten Free Bakery
Co-Publisher Sophie Stone and I first encountered Katz Gluten Free Bakery products at the Meadowlands KosherFest. At that time, we knew little about the health problems to which this kosher bakery provides relief. Feeling that an in-house visit would be beneficial, we traveled to Monroe, NY where we were welcomed by Joseph Jacobowitz, Sales/Marketing Director. I do mean welcomed!
He first sat us down in the small office which doubled as a showroom and explained the history of the company and its growth. His sister had suffered from fatigue, headaches and indigestion for years. It was later diagnosed as Celiac Disease which she eagerly researched. Medical testing showed that she and two of her children suffered from this inherited autoimmune disorder.
A mother protects her brood and she was no exception. Research helped her to develop recipes that maintained the taste of the food that they were accustomed to, but were gluten free. Her friends and neighbors began begging her for product and out of necessity, Katz Gluten Free was born. Today, the company operates out of a state of the art gluten free and kosher facility.
Sophie and I were conducted on a tour of the bakery and attested to its cleanliness. Jacobowitz insisted that we should taste many of the products and fellow foodie Sophie and I complied. She added butter or a spread while I tasted each item as presented. Some were warm, some reheated. At each bite, we would look at each other and nod approval. The taste was equal to, if not better, that gluten items.
Sharing an interest, Joseph, Sophie and I became good friends during that short visit. Mr. Jacobowitz will be a speaker at Paramus Sunrise Rotary Club in the near future and has promised to bring his wares for tasting. www.paramussunrise.org will list the visit.
He can be contacted at www.katzglutenfree.com, joej@katzglutenfree.com or 845 782 5307. He assured us that product was available at the Paramus Fairway Market and that they had distribution in Canada and the United Kingdom.
