Sophie Stone suggested that I do a story on a play, My Fair Lady, being presented at the Paramus High School by the students. She never prepared me for the lovely Kei Muto who is starring as Eliza nor for her co-star David Marcus. The only insight I had was when I contacted Guidance Counselor (and Councilwoman) Mrs. Connie Wagner. Mrs. Wagner was right, Kei is delightful.
Kei met me at the auditorium along with David and from the start; one could see that they were full of enthusiasm. We sat in the orchestra pit while we discussed the play, their parts as well as a little about their background. While neither, at this point in time, intends to become full time thespians, their scope of knowledge, their maturity, their understanding points for them both to become successes at whatever they decide to do.
Eliza Doolittle aka Kei Muto has to transform a lowly cockney accent into ‘My Fair Lady. In this endeavor she comes under the tutelage of Dr. Henry Higgins played by David Marcus. As David pointed out, in the play they also had to adapt to the type of English spoken in the Edwardian era. To do this, they had to watch movies and the details in the script which also helped. Kei’s stage presence and vocal delivery is helped by the fact that she is taking singing lessons.
Both seniors, Kei hopes to study Psychology in college. Both she and David, also a senior, have no idea of which college they will go to. I am sure that Mrs. Wagner will be of help in this area. Kei is also a femme du monde having traveled to Canada and Japan.
Her costar is looking forward to studying Anthropology and professes to be interested in world culture. To back this up, at his young teenage life, he has traveled to Canada, England and France.
They both enjoy the interaction of the stage and while not planning to major in dramatics, they hope to continue on at their respective college choices. Their mien, their sureness, their maturity all came through during the interview. They were a delight .. as Mrs. Wagner indicated!
