Dear Editor:

As the director of a large child care and early learning center, I care very much about our most vulnerable citizens – our young children. As I look at their innocent faces (yes, there are a few who have a sparkle of mischief in their eyes) day after day, I am constantly reminded of the responsibility each and every one of us has in keeping them safe, providing for their needs and shaping their futures.

With this in mind, I ask all readers to do the following: take a moment to observe a child reading a book, gleefully playing with peers, riding a wheel toy or examining a bug as it crawls on the ground. Now that you have observed the simple joy, curiosity and innocence in that child, make a commitment to support his or her needs.

The Week of the Young Child, April 2 – 8, 2006, is a perfect time to get involved. Call a local not-for-profit children’s agency and tell them you would like to volunteer. Find out the names of your local politicians and ask what they are doing to support our young children. Thank your child’s childcare provider and teachers for all they are doing to care for and educate your children. Make it a point to attend The Week of the Young Child’s special “Family Fun Festival” at the Rhodda Center in Teaneck on Sunday, April 2, from 12:30 p.m. - 3 p.m.

I’ve worked with children for nearly 30 years, and know how important the first five years of a child’s life are to their healthy development. Please make it your goal to help to make a difference today.

Sincerely,

Sandy Richards
Director of Daycare Services
Turrell Child Care & Early Learning Center
