Chairman & Editor-in-Chief of Newsweek to Deliver Bergen's Commencement Addr

Richard M. Smith, the Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Newsweek, will deliver the commencement address at the 37th Commencement of Bergen Community College on Friday, May 19, 2006 at 3:00 p.m., outdoors on the Paramus campus. His address, and the proceedings of the Commencement Exercises, will be simultaneously interpreted in sign language for the benefit of hearing-impaired graduates and guests, and will be Web cast live on May 19, to a worldwide audience at http://www.bergen.edu/commencement.ram, for the benefit of students with families around the world.
Judith K. Winn, President of Bergen Community College, will preside. Greetings will be given by Dennis McNerney, Bergen County Executive and Bernadette P. McPherson, Chair of the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The candidates for degrees will be presented by Dr. Gary Porter, Academic Vice President, and Dr. Raymond Smith, Interim Vice President of Student Services. Stephen J. Moses,/b>, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, will confer the degrees.

Brittney Tillett, a resident of Dumont
, will deliver the Valedictory Remarks. Tillett—who will be graduating with an A.A. in Liberal Arts—achieved a 4.0 cumulative grade point average while being enrolled in the Honors Program at the College. She was also active in Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges.

Richard M. Smith has been Editor-in-Chief of Newsweek since 1984, having served in a variety of editorial roles both in New York and overseas for the preceding 14 years. In 1991, he was also named President, and in 1998, Chairman. He has also been Chairman of the Magazine Publishers of America (MPA), the founding chairman of the MPA’s New Media Committee, and a board member of the American Society of Magazine Editors. In January 2002, he received the MPA’s highest honor, the Henry Johnson Fisher Award for lifetime achievement.

As chairman and editor-in-chief, Mr. Smith is chief executive officer for both editorial and business operations for Newsweek. Under his guidance, the magazine has continued to grow in both circulation and audience and has remained independent and profitable in an era of unprecedented consolidation in the magazine marketplace. His tenure has also marked a period of editorial excellence for Newsweek. The publication has won numerous editorial awards including the magazine industry’s most prestigious award, the 2004 National Magazine Award for general excellence, for its coverage of the war in Iraq.

A native of Detroit, Mr. Smith received a B.A. from Albion College in Michigan. He attended Columbia University’s School of International Affairs before receiving his M.S. in journalism from Columbia. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and holds an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Albion College.

The Class of 2006 at Bergen Community College includes 1375 graduates for August 2005, December 2005 and May 2006. 1316 graduates have earned Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, or Associate in Applied Science degrees, and 59 earned Certificates. The majority of the graduates will continue their education at four-year colleges and universities.

Bergen Community College is a public two-year coeducational college, enrolling more than 14,000 students in Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degree programs, and certificate programs. More than 10,000 students are enrolled in non-credit, professional courses through the Division of Continuing Education, the Institute for Learning in Retirement, and the Philip J.
