Protest at White House
On Thursday, April 20th a contingent of Taiwanese- Americans set off before dawn to join 18 Taiwanese organizations in Washington DC to protest against Chinese President Hu Jintao’s visit with President Bush. Starting in Fairlawn, the charter bus picked up the first contingent before traveling to Morristown and the Delaware to fill the bus with people who felt strongly enough to take the time off to make the long journey.

Dr. Michael Yeun, my good friend and dentist, picked me up at 5:15 AM and off to board the bus we went.

Paul, our Carefree Bus Tours driver, was given travel pickup points and was very gracious about making all the stops. First we went to a shopping center in Morristown and then down to the rest stop in Delaware on Route 95 to pick up another contingent from Philadelphia and Delaware. We filled the bus !

The destination was Lafayette Park to the north of the White House. There, we united with other protesters from all over the area. One contingent even flew in from Michigan. The purpose: to demand the dismantling of 800 missiles, recognize its independence and to renounce the use of force against Taiwan.

At Lafayette Park, speeches were already underway amidst a pageantry of flags and banners. The protesters were kept away from the White House and the Chinese welcoming band by fencing and mounted patrolmen. There was a cacophony created between the opposing factions. To add to the din, the protesters brought in a big bass drum which echoed loudly in competing with the reception band. One might think it was a scene from Deliverance with drums substituted.

Eighteen different organizations participated and each leader was given a chance to speak at the platform set up in the park Their peaceful demands were chanted over and over again and hopefully heard. After the ceremony in the park was over, the protesters took up their banners and the American flag and paraded within the perimeter of the park area,

Among those from the NJ. PA area were:

Ken & Lina Chang, Tou-san & Shu-Hui Chang,
Stephen Chen, Jenyi Chen,
Philp Chen, Jenn M. & Gin S. Chern,
Mel Fabrikant,
Vincent Hwang, Grace & King Hsu,
George Kao, Kuonan Kuo
K. Liang, Yuh-jyh Lin, Yi-Tsung Liu
Nobu & Aki Shiau, Song Su,
Martin Tsai,
Ai-Lan Wang, T. Y. & Sarah Wei,
Chi-hwu & Virginia Wu,
Michael Yeun, Stella C. Yu,

While the demonstration was peaceful, our bus load did encounter some trying moments. On Route 95 North in Maryland, a car suddenly spun out of control. We think the driver might have fallen asleep. If our driver hadn’t been alert and an experienced driver, we might have plowed right into the car. Instead, Paul watched the manipulations of the car and skillfully avoided contact. He received a loud round of applause.

Following is Doctor Yeun’s speech:

................................................................................................

Dear friends of Taiwan:

What is Taiwan to us?

To me, Taiwan is not only the place where I was born; not only the place where my ancestors were buried; Taiwan is not only a small island where resides 23 million people, and not only a place that produces lots of products for the world and invests billions of dollars in China. Taiwan is a place where people suffered the longest martial law in human history after a Chinese massacre of Taiwanese, an event that took place Feb. 28, 1947. Taiwan is a place where my friends Dr. Kung-Lu Wang, Mr. Nylon

Cheng, Mr. Yi-Hsiong Lin's family and others were killed under the Chiang Kai-sek's KMT regime not too long ago... devastating! Their killers are still at large today!

To me, most importantly, Taiwan is the place where American dreams of freedom, democracy and self-determination came true. Unfortunately, today these universal dreams of freedom are oppressed by more than 800 units of Chinese missiles. This number is increased annually. Would you like to have one of these artillery pointed at you and your family?

Taiwan has come a long way as the best friend of the United States of America.

Taiwanese have suffered long enough under the Nationalist Chinese brutal rule these past four decades. The people of Taiwan will not endure another attempt again from this harassment by the people's Republic of China. We are here to demand the dismantling of all the Chinese missiles against Taiwan. Stop the terror expansion of the Chinese military empire. We are here to ask for the support of the whole world toward an independent Republic of Taiwan. A free and democratic Taiwan is your best friend. The Taiwanese sovereignty is the foundation of this friendship of peace. The Sovereignty of Taiwan has to be respected, not compromised.

May God Bless the USA and Taiwan.

May God Bless our Tibetan, East Turkistan and Chinese freedom fighters.

Long Live Taiwan!

Long live the oppressed!

Let my people go!

Free at last!
