Bergen Community College’s track and field team received top honors at the Northeast District Track Championship, recording six first-place finishes, three second-place finishes, and four third-place finishes at the 2006 Northeast District Track Championship hosted by Howard County Community College in Columbia, MD. The top placing team has also qualified for the ninth consecutive year to compete in the three-day National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship in Buffalo, New York.
A breakdown of the Northeast District standings is as follows:
First-year student Chris De Gannes, of Bergenfield, finished first in both the preliminaries and finals of the men’s 100-meter dash. De Gannes posted times of 11.19 seconds in the preliminaries and improved to 11.07 seconds in the finals, outlasting a competitive field of over 20 sprinters in both events. He followed up his victory in the 100-meter dash with a second-place finish in the men’s long jump recording a distance of 6.61 meters.
First-year student Caitlin Reilly, of Hackensack, was awarded first-place for her performance in the women’s hammer throw. Reilly threw the hammer vigorously sending it 35.41 meters--nearly eight meters more than her closest competitor.
De Gannes, sophomores Joseph Powell, of East Orange and Kenneth Harris, of Clifton, and freshman Ian Hicks, of Paterson, took home first-place in the men’s 4x100-meter relay finishing with a total race time of 44.54 seconds. Powell also posted a third-place finish in the men’s 400-meter dash, clocking in at 51.83 seconds.
Powell, Harris, Hicks and second-year student Jesse Ortiz, of West New York, won in the men’s 4x400-meter relay by completing the race in 3:34. Later that day, Ortiz placed second in the men’s 800-meter run, finishing with a time of 2:06.
Dana Miscia, a sophomore from Montclair, posted second-place in the Women’s 800-meter run. Miscia finished her race with an impressive time of 2:37 and missed finishing first by less than three seconds.
Freshman Joseph Kufel, of Oradell, placed second in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Kufel finished with a total race time of 10:52. Kufel also posted third-place in the men’s 800-meter run finishing at 2:09.
Joshua Luis, of Little Ferry, recorded third-place finishes in both the men’s hammer throw and men’s shot put. Luis threw distances of 41.89 and 12.83 meters in each event respectively.
Bergen Community College is a public two-year coeducational college, enrolling more than 14,000 students in Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degree programs, and certificate programs.
