Raymond T. Smith Appointed Vice Pesident of Student Services

The appointment of Mr. Smith, approved by the Bergen Community College Board of Trustees at the June 7, 2006 meeting, is effective July 1, 2006.

“Raymond Smith brings to his responsibilities strong leadership skills and a rich academic and student services administrative background in higher education,” says Dr. Winn. “Raymond Smith’s vision and energy will enhance student services that are critical to student outcomes and success.”
“It is with great pride that I accept this appointment,” says Smith, who has served as Interim Vice President at Bergen since March, 2005. “I have always had profound respect for the mission and vision of community colleges. I am honored to be at Bergen Community College to help further that mission by providing an integrated and reflective services program to Bergen students.”

Smith came to Bergen from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, where he most recently served as the Associate Provost for Student Affairs, and before that, as the Associate Dean/ Director of Academic Affairs at Rutgers University – Newark College of Arts and Sciences. In the community college sector, Smith served as the Director of the Educational Opportunity Fund program at Bergen Community College, the Presidential Assistant at Sussex Community College, and in the Office of Community Colleges for the New Jersey State Department of Higher Education.

In addition to his administrative experiences, Smith also served as an adjunct professor at Rutgers University, Bergen Community College, Essex Community College, Somerset County Community College, and Clinton Correctional Facility. Smith also served as the Chief of Staff for the New Jersey State Legislature, 34th District. Smith holds an Ed. M. and a B.A. from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

Bergen Community College is a public two-year coeducational college, enrolling more than 14,000 students in Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degree programs, and certificate programs. More than 10,000 students are enrolled in non-credit, professional courses through the Division of Continuing Education, the Institute for Learning in Retirement, and the Philip J.
