The Paramus Board of Health has announced plans for its annual Community Health Day. “We hold this free program once a year to provide our residents with a comprehensive and varied program of health services and screenings,†said Health Officer, John Hopper. “The basic goal of the screenings is the early detection of chronic illness and prevention of disease, disability and premature death.†Community Health Day will be held this year at the Paramus Life Safety Building on Carlough Drive. The program will be open to the public from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2006.
Early detection of cancer promotes the increased possibility of cure. Various types of cancer screenings to be held include breast cancer, oral cancer and skin cancer. Hemoccult slides will be given for use at home to detect blood in the stool, an early sign of colon cancer. Blood pressure screening will be offered to detect hypertension, a major cause of heart disease and stroke.
Additional services to be offered include hearing evaluation for adults, podiatric screening, and vision and glaucoma screening. Hopper also advised that residents may sign up at Health Day for the Board’s Annual Flu and Pneumococcal Immunization program.
Local area hospitals will again participate in Community Health Day and provide information promoting a variety of services. Staff from Valley Hospital will be on hand to conduct body fat analysis. Representatives from Pascack Valley Hospital will answer questions about Lyme and other Tick borne diseases. Hackensack University Medical Center will have staff from the Stroke Center, the Comprehensive Wound Care Center, their Home Health Agency and a representative from the Maureen Fund to provide education about Ovarian Cancer.
In addition, the Ellen H. Lazar Shoppe on Fifth has donated a stylish hat that will be won by a lucky Health Day participant. The Long Term Care Facility at Bergen Regional Medical Center will also have a representative available for any questions. Again this year, free chair massages will be available. The Community Blood Mobile will also be on site for blood donations and a large selection of literature on health topics will be free to participants. The Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods and Golds Gym will also be represented.
Hopper emphasized that the testing done at Community Health Day for Paramus residents is for screening purposes only. If a problem is found, participants are notified immediately and encouraged to contact their own physician for further examination. All screenings are staffed by volunteer physicians, dentists, podiatrists, audiologists, nurses and residents.
The Health Officer and members of the Board of Health invite Paramus residents to participate in this important annual health maintenance service.
