The Bergen Community College men’s soccer team garnered their first win of the season by upending Passaic County Community College by a score of 5-2 on Thursday, and improved to a 1-2 record against Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Division III opponents.
First-year forward, Mike Jaimes, of New Milford, proved himself to be a potent offensive threat, scoring three unanswered goals in Thursday’s contest. Joffre Galeas, of Kearny, followed up with a fourth goal that put Bergen in a position of dominance. Second-year midfield standout and team captain, Hernan Velarde, of Ridgefield, provided the assists for two of Jaimes’ goals and the one scored by Galeas. Sophomore, Joe Kufel, of Oradell, secured Bergen’s victory by scoring the team’s fifth and final goal in the closing minutes of the game. Robert Burton, of Hasbrouck Heights, provided the team’s other two assists.
Velarde, the team’s captain and a 2005 Second Team XIX All-Region and GSAC selection, was highly enthused about the team’s performance. “We played an excellent game against Passaic,†Velarde said. “Our confidence was there, our communication had improved, and our heart was set on winning. I believe that those were the intangibles we were missing in our first two games.â€
Bergen men’s soccer coach, Salvador Guillen believes that his team has the potential to continue their winning ways. After evaluating their performance in the game against Passaic, Guillen believes that they have the potential to surpass even their own expectations. “I believe that we have a very strong chance of competing in the regional playoffs,†Guillen said. “If this team continues to work hard and dedicate itself to improving, I feel we will have an excellent chance at winning the regional championship.â€
Thursday’s hero, Jaimes, is a firm believer in Coach Guillen’s methods. Jaimes feels that the practices have emphasized the two traits any soccer team needs to win: athleticism and agility. “Coach has prepared us through intense practice sessions,†Jaimes said. “By practicing harder than the other team before each game, our physical conditioning surpasses theirs, and we are able to play a better game.â€
