Walk from Obesity fundraiser in Manhattan to educate and raise awareness of the dangers of obesity and availability of its treatments
MANHATTAN, NY. September 15, 2006 Nearly one out of every three Americans is currently obese, causing the Surgeon General to declare obesity a national epidemic, which a scientific journal recently warned could evolve into a pandemic. One local physician is co- sponsoring a Walk from Obesity to increase awareness of New York area residents of the dangers associated with obesity and what can be done to cure it.
“Obesity is the number 2 cause of preventable death only exceeded by smoking. The money raised through this event will help increase awareness, acceptance and recognition that realistic solutions exist.“ Dr. Joseph Kamelgard MD, FACS whose Lighter for Life® practice dedicates itself exclusively to providing bloodless bariatric surgery to morbidly obese patients who have been unable to lose weight through diet and exercise alone.
The 1 and a 1/2 mile walk is a non-competitive event fundraiser to help reduce disability, death and discrimination of people who are obese by educating the public and healthcare professionals about effective treatments. The Walk will be held Sunday September 17, 2006 at 9:30 a.m. in Riverside Park (Riverside Drive between 83rd and 84th streets Manhattan, New York. Let’s be ACTIVE together! The walk will guide participants along the beautiful waterfront path of the Hudson River. On a clear day you will see the George Washington Bridge. We will do a loop in the park and retrace our steps to end up back at the starting line tent.
Many will be walking on behalf of those unable to do so, because obesity has stolen their mobility, dignity, and hope. Walk from Obesity was established to give hope to those needing it most. Walkers raise money by asking friends, family, and co-workers to sponsor them. In addition to walker income, funds are raised through sponsorship, matching gifts, corporate contributions, and other fundraising activities.
