An invitation came in the mail inviting me, as a senior citizen, to share in the West Brook React Club’s annual Senior Citizen’s Thanksgiving Feast. Of course I accepted, having attended for several years.
This was a first for Principal Joan Kelly Broe who succeeded the popular Bill Freeman when he retired. She welcomed everyone to the festivities and started the entertainment going. React Advisor Karen Petersen was like a mother hen watching over the youngsters as they wended their way through the tables offering coffee, tea, soft drinks and water in a non-stop wave. The staff had helped in the preparation of the turkeys that the students handed out to the hungry ‘gobblers’.
As the servers came to the table, they presented a colorful platter loaded with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, cranberry jelly and a roll and butter. On the yellow table clothed tables were handmade baskets of plenty and a huge candy bar imprinted by the React Club with joyous greetings and sayings. For those that don’t know, React is an organization sponsored by the local Rotary Club.
The middle schoolers not only took part in the musical presentations, but made sure that their guests were well fed and had plenty to drink. Wave upon wave of students passed by the tables asking if everything was alright, was there anything needed, did we need something to drink and did we have our fill of dessert. One young lady came walking around with a can of whipped cream ready to decorate the various pies.
Former principal William Freeman was present as well as an ‘alumni’ of retired educators. Vice Principal Kevin Brentnall helped to supervise the festivities.
The seniors not only ate there, but were given packages of food to take home and as we left, the young people handed out some delicacies in a Ziploc bag with Happy Thanksgiving written on it.
The React Club at West Brook, their advisors, the West Brook staff and the student’s parents can be proud of their goodwill gesture!
