NEW YORK, NY—December 26, 2006 – Get ready for your New Year’s Eve close-up. The makeup pros who gave Beyoncé—and Jennifer Hudson—their gorgeous looks in Dreamgirls share the do it yourself details exclusively on Glamour.com by clicking here.
“At the beginning of the movie, Beyoncé plays a 16-year-old girl, Deena, who’s not very glamorous,†says makeup pro Francesca Tolot to Glamour.com’s beauty blogger Andrea Pomerantz Lustig.
“This was a problem, because even without makeup, Beyoncé stands out! I’d apply the tiniest bit of foundation, gloss and mascara, and she’d be piercing the screen!â€
“One of my favorite makeup moments is the disco scene when Beyoncé sings ‘One Night Only,’†says Tolot. “I used makeup glitter on her eyes in the colors of the dress: lime green, dark green, turquoise. Then I highlighted her brows and the tops of her cheekbones with white glitter, did a silvery spray all over her face (you can get it at beauty supply stores) and finished with a light-pink lip gloss. For a pretty shimmery eyeliner, try Pop Beauty Glitter Gels.â€
“When Deena walks into her record company and sees a blown-up photo of herself on the wall, I had the makeup trailer set up with tons of photos of Diana Ross and the Supremes so I could be inspired to inspire Beyoncé. She loved it! For this scene, I started with mascara as a base—I used L’Oreal Double Extend Lash Extender & Magnifier—then I applied false lashes.â€
“The first time you see the group transformed into The Dreams is a real makeover moment,†says makeup artist Shutchai Tym Buacharern, who did up Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose for the movie. All three stars are wearing cobalt blue eyeshadow on their lids, a highlighter on their browbones, black eyeliner winged out at the ends and two pairs of false lashes. To try it yourself, Buacharern recommends using a soft, sheer blue hue as a wash over a classic smoky black or gray eye, accompanied by major black mascara.
For the finale, Buacharern layered brown and silver shadows on Beyoncé’s lids, ran black eyeshadow next to her lashes to create depth, then applied platinum glitter right on the lids creating a strong but still soft effect. Buacharern used a lot of concealer under her eyes, lots of blush and peachy lip gloss topped with an extra coat of clear gloss.
