New Jersey State Senator Nia H. Gill will deliver the keynote address for Bergen Community College’s commemoration of Black History Month on Tuesday, February 6.

Black History Month, which celebrates the rich history and contributions made by individuals of African ancestry to American life, culture and the arts, is co-sponsored by the College’s Office of Student Life and the Center for the Study of Intercultural Understanding. Several events have been planned and each daytime event is free and open to the general public. For more information, please call the Office of Student Life at 201-447-7215.

Senator Gill has been serving in the New Jersey State Senate since 2002. The Vice Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, Gill is the first African American and the first woman in the history of New Jersey to serve on the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee. A representative of the 34th legislative district, the Senator supported the measure made into law criminalizing the deprivation of civil rights by public officials in New Jersey, making racial profiling a state crime. She also sponsored the New Jersey Civil Rights Act, which allows for suit to be brought against any person that deprives another of any rights, privileges, due processes or equal protection based upon discrimination.
