Police Chief Fred Corrubia
Our Police Chief has retired! His accomplishments, while they speak for themselves, may go unnoticed. His dedication to ‘the job’ rarely saw him smiling.

www.ParamusPost.com has one of those rare moments captured and in our archives. Frederick J. Corrubia Jr has had a long history of active service within the Paramus PD serving from 1972.

He attained the rank of Sergeant in 1983, Lieutenant in 1985, Captain in 1988 and Deputy Chief in 2001 before being appointed to Chief on August 27th, 2002. . He also served over a year as a plain clothes undercover operative. In 1982, he was inducted into the Honor Legion of the State of New Jersey. While starting training at the Bergen County Police Academy, he pursued a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Safety at William Paterson College and an Associate Degree in Applied Science at Bergen Community College.

Of course he was in the military serving in the US Air Force and was at the Pentagon doing HQ Communications from June 1967 to 1971. While this experience served him well, he never stopped his education courses studying Police Management, Management Techniques, Legal Aspects of Discipline, Performance Evaluation, Executive Guide to Budget Process, Narcotics Investigation, annual Vehicle Theft Training, Firearms Tactical and Hostage Situations, Protection Operations Briefing (US Secret Service), Incident Command System for OEM, and Internal Affairs Policy and Procedure.

I first met then Captain Corrubia when he was charged by Chief Claude Majcher to handle a problem. A friend of mine had a complaint about Police discrimination and we were both called in by him separately to state the incident. What was most impressive about Fred was that while he did listen and understand the problem, he stood up for the officer that was involved and stated that if a formal complaint was filed, it would be on the Police Officer’s record. He suggested that it be handled in house, commendable for a man who thought of his officer’s future. Of course we agreed and did not file a formal complaint. We let him take care of the situation.

Paramus and his department were prime in his thoughts as Police Chief. He went so far as to build up morale by showcasing the people in his care. One of the many things he accomplished was promoting the Honor Guard and bringing it up to peak status. The Honor Guard participated in many Paramus events and also across the County. www.ParamusPost.com was allowed to showcase an officer of the month. The chief assigned Police Officer Norm Bizek (now a Sergeant) to make the selections. Lieutenant Jim Sheehan (now a Captain) was permitted to put pride back in his department by selecting people for publicity that were doing behind the scenes job.

Chief Frederick J. Corrubia Jr joined the force on his birthday, January 31, 1972 and is retiring on his birthday, January 31, 2007. Paramus will miss this dedicated citizen.
