Paramus Board of Health Offers Free Hearing Screening

28 million Americans suffer from full or partial hearing loss. It is one of the common problems afflicting older adults, found in one-third of our population over the age of 60, and three-fourths of those over the age of 75. There can be many causes for hearing loss, including disease, trauma, exposure to loud noise or even use of certain medications. Hearing loss can range from a slight inability to hear certain sounds, such as high pitched women’s voices to a total inability to hear any sound at all. Some hearing loss may be temporary and some can be corrected. People often feel embarrassed about admitting that they cannot hear, but if left untreated a hearing loss may get worse.
Paramus Health Officer John Hopper says, “If you strain to follow a conversation, have difficulty listening when there is any amount of background noise or find yourself needing to ask people to repeat themselves you may wish to have your hearing professionally evaluated.â€
Paramus Board of Health President Mary Ann Siniscalchi invites Paramus residents to call for an appointment for a free hearing screening. This will be offered 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on May 16 at Paramus Borough Hall by Total Hearing Care of Englewood. Chalen Kithcart, who will conduct the screening, is board certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences. If it is determined that a hearing problem exists participants will be referred for further testing.
Call the Paramus Borough Nurses Office for an appointment at (201) 265-2100,
X 615 or X 618.
