Although the actual dates of the Lunar New Year celebration had passed, Trinity Presbyterian Church once again held a ceremony in its honor a week ago on Sunday.
Sure enough, Mayor James Tedesco came to church in time for the latter part of the services and the beginning of the dance presentations. During the intermission, all one heard was “How are you Jimmy?†“Jim†“Haven’t seen you in quite awhile†“How is Renee doing?†etc. Needless to say, our Mayor having grown up in Paramus, a good many people know or have had contact with him or his family. Myrt, his mother, was also asked about; she is now living in Florida.
We were treated to dances by the King Lai Cultural Dance group which included depiction of the harvest and the suns, flowers and swords as well as beautiful ribbons wafting in the breeze. This was done in colorful costumes and the applause was mighty. I might suggest that our Paramus Cultural Council look into using this type of presentation as one of their summer offerings. They could even use it for a winter showing.
The Lion Dance from Lion Dance Master Henry Lee started off with a booming of the drums in the background. Watching these performers has always been impressive. One can feel the intensity of the action. We had a playing of the Gu Zheng, a cultural zither aptly presented by Priscilla Chow. A piano solo was offered by Lilly Lee.
After the musical presentations, we went into the community room where authentic Chinese dishes were offered buffet style. This is an occasion that once seen, will continue in your memory! Contributing to the festival were Dr. & Mrs, Joseph Yoe and several anonymous families.
