Dear Friends:
You have likely heard about the tragic traffic accident involving Governor Jon S. Corzine, a State Trooper, and the governor's aide last evening. The Governor remains in the Intensive Care Unit at Cooper Hospital in Camden due to the extent of his injuries which are reportedly not life-threatening. The State Trooper who has driving his vehicle as well as the governor's staffer are recovering from minor injuries.
According to media reports, the Governor underwent surgery last evening to repair severe injuries to his left femur. Mr. Corzine also suffered from a broken sternum, a broken collarbone, six fractured ribs on each side, and a slightly fractured lower vertebra. He is scheduled for two additional surgeries on Saturday and Monday to continue to repair his leg. Reports also indicate that the Governor's breathing is being assisted by a breathing tube as a result of the chest injuries. Mr. Corzine's recuperation may reportedly take up to three months or possibly longer given the extent of his injuries.
The accident occurred last evening shortly before 6 p.m. as the Governor's motorcade traveled north on the Garden State Parkway near Galloway Township. Reportedly, a red pick-up truck was driving erratically, which forced a white vehicle into the lane where the motorcade was traveling. The State Trooper driving tried to regain control of their vehicle which was forced off the roadway and into the metal guardrail. At this time, there in an ongoing investigation into the accident. The New Jersey State Police is considering this a hit-and-run accident and is searching for the red pick-up truck that left the scene of the accident.
Senate President Richard Codey will serve as Acting Governor for an undetermined time period until Governor Corzine recovers. In the harsh reality of New Jersey politics, the Governor's recovery period will likely mean a delay in certain initiatives and a temporary change in the political spectrum. For instance, the State Budget for Fiscal Year 2008 must still be signed into law by July 1, and we know that the Governor was planning significant policy announcements on the environment and asset monetization in the coming weeks. Clearly, Governor Corzine's recovery is of the utmost importance, and we are confident in Mr. Codey's proven leadership of our state.
Please join us in our thoughts and prayers for Governor Corzine and wish him well as recovers from this unfortunate accident.
Sincerely,
All of us at Nancy H. Becker Associates
