Westfield Shopping Centers Nationwide Dim Lights in Observance of Earth Day
In observance of Earth Day, on Saturday April 21, the sixty Westfield shopping centers in the U.S. will dim the lights by approximately 50 percent for thirty minutes at 3pm in order to recognize and increase awareness of energy conservation. Officials estimate that by ‘dimming down to green up,’ approximately 4500 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions will be averted at what is typically the highest peak demand for electricity during the day. The event will take place in common areas throughout each center and not in individual stores. At outdoor centers, the lights will be dimmed in Food Court and Dining Terrace areas.
“This symbolic gesture demonstrates Westfield’s commitment to environmental responsibility,†said Ken Wong, President of Westfield, LLC. “By observing Earth Day at each of its sixty shopping centers across the country, Westfield hopes to increase awareness of energy conservation throughout the communities it serves and among its fellow corporate citizens.â€
Established in 1970, Earth Day is a global celebration of the environment and the commitment to its protection. Locally, Westfield Garden State Plaza encourages conservation in a variety of ways. Westfield Garden State Plaza recently replaced all of the exterior lights in the parking lots with energy efficient fixtures. Westfield Garden State Plaza is also installing new roofing with a white membrane to reduce utility consumption during the summer months.
Westfield has been recognized by a number of organizations for its initiatives to reduce energy consumption. In a report issued by the Environment California Research and Policy Center, it was noted that Westfield prevents 5.6 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year through its efforts to replace older light bulbs and ballasts with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) fluorescent and LED (Light
Emitting Diode) technology. The company also received a “Flex Your Power†honorable mention from the state of California in 2006 for its lighting retrofit program at five shopping centers in San Diego, which reduced peak demand by 565 kWh (kilowatt hours). Southern California Edison also acknowledged Westfield for utilizing LED technology in its holiday lighting instead of incandescent bulbs, using 91 percent less energy. Westfield will also provide and install a solar power system at its Main Place shopping center in Santa Ana, California, to be complete in September 2007.
