The D.A.R.E. carnival opened at the Westfield Garden State Plaza Shopping Center on Thursday evening. Amusements of America is playing it for the 3rd successive year. D.A.R.E.’s Nick DeMauro has brought them back and he has been on duty during the carnival hours. www.ParamusPost.com has been after this busy man to try and get a bit of his background and achievements.
We finally got together and learned a bit more about the D.A.R.E. program and Nick’s role in making it a success.
We learned that DARE, NJ is the largest statewide drug and violence prevention charity in the United States. They provide over 28 million dollars a year in service to the youth and residents of the Garden State. DARE is administered by a forty member Board of Directors from major corporations such as: Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield. PSE&G, Verizon, Wachovia Bank, PNC Bank, Adams Respiratory, Schering Plough and Deloite & Touche just to name a few.
At the helm of DARE is Nick DeMauro, a 46 year old recognized expert in Drug and Violence prevention. Nick proudly claims local roots: he grew up in Bergen County. New Milford to be exact and served 20 years with the New Milford Police Department. Nick is also the nephew of the late John DeMauro. a Paramus Police Officer.
Serving as Senior Deputy Director of DARE Worldwide, he was later selected as the full time Chief Executive Officer of DARE NJ. One of his brainstorms was to operate a carnival. This stemmed from fond memories of the Paramus Boy’s Club Carnival held annually at Alexanders and where his uncle John often patrolled.
He gives credit to Mayor James Tedesco and Westfield Garden State Plaza Shopping Center for having the foresight and comprehension of the value of the carnival to the community of Paramus and to the DARE program. Proceeds are split between two DARE programs, New Jersey and Paramus. In its third year, this event has raised over $30,000.00 for the Paramus DARE program.
On the personal element, Nick is married and he and his wife have three offspring, 17, 9 and 7. Nick is looking forward to his 17 year old’s entry into Penn State in the near future.
You can visit the Amusement of America carnival at the northwest part of the GSP where the buses arrive and depart. They will be there until this coming weekend.. Your patronage will help the DARE program. Your children will not only enjoy the carnival, but will benefit from the DARE program later on.
