Press Conference
Thus spoke Mayor James J. Tedesco III at a press conference!

Mayor Tedesco held a hurried press conference after a two hour meeting concerning the tainted soil problem at West Brook Middle School. He presented members of the press and through them to the residents of Paramus with the facts concerning the school closing and potential re-opening.

He went on to say that the school would remain closed until declared safe stating that he would rather err on the side of safety. The School Board was contacted and concurs. He would like to see the perimeter opened so that the residents can enjoy the ball field, track and other outdoor offerings, but will not do so until the test results are returned.

Inside the school 112 samplings were taken and no trace of contamination found. However more test results are due back on Monday from Salt Lake City where they were sent. Mayor Tedesco described the tests that were taken and promised to make the results public when received. He will also be guided by the NJ State Department of Environmental Protection’ decision about the safety of the school and its grounds. Most of the contaminants were found around and in the tainted soil pile.

Health Officer John Harper and Council President Frank Ciambrone also spoke. On the sidelines were the Borough Attorney, Deputy Chief Rick Cary, Captain Jim Sheehan, Senator joe Coniglio and Councilman Rich LaBarbiera (one of the borough council investigators).

The Mayor will be sending out a letter to Paramus residents affirming his intention to keep their families safe and restore public confidence in our great school system. He is also calling a town-wide meeting at Bergen Community College on Wednesday, June 13th at 7:00 PM.
