Dear Mel,
I was very sorry to hear the news of your recent diagnosis. I am glad that you remain upbeat and maintain a very positive attitude as you begin treatment.
Your story reminds me of the news that I heard almost 15 years ago. It was 1992 and I was feeling a little under the weather. I visited my internal medicine doctor, who was away on vacation, and was seen by one of his associates. I was prescribed some antibiotics and was told to return in the near future. I continued to feel sick and fatigued and went back for an office visit. After a number of tests, blood work, and a biopsy, I was diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkin's Disease). I was upset and nervous and quickly set up an appointment with an oncologist.
I, like you, started treatment at what is now known as the Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. I remember vividly advising them that I did not want to start chemotherapy. I recall asking what would happen if I did not start my cycle and being told that I would die. I underwent a number of procedures and started an aggressive protocol (MOPP/ABV, etc.). I relied on the support of family, friends, and co-workers and experienced a number of ups and downs along the way. I was pleased with my doctor and the staff and completed the first phase of my treatment. I traveled to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York for a consultation. My records were reviewed and I began radiation treatments. I continued my fight and am pleased to say that my battle was successful. After my recovery I became involved with many groups and organizations, helping those diagnosed with and/or battling cancer (or serious diseases) and their families. I started volunteering at the Tomorrows Children's Fund at HUMC, spending time working with the young patients. I believe in the pay it forward principle and will continue to do my best to help others.
I wish you luck as you continue your treatment. From what I have observed, you are a man that keeps busy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and will not let anything slow you down. You are truly an asset to ParamusPost.com and Paramus. Keep up the fight and always know that support is just a phone call away!
All the best- Mark
