Honorary Nigerian Chief
By Jim Castellanos

Well, life still has some surprises....  On Thursday, at our Rotary meeting, I learned that I had been named an Honorary Nigerian Chief!
the honor was presented to me by my Nigerian Rotary friend (whose father is a real Nigerian Chief) and by the Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Al Rowe, another good friend of mine.

It was totally unexpected and it was easy to tell from the dazed look on my face as this whole event was unraveling, that I didn't have a clue as to what was about to happen. I was overwhelmed, honored and, actually, speechless. There was so little that would have been appropriate to say at that time.

My Nigerian name is Chief "Afiwagboye" which, I understand, means person of impeccable character (well, they got the "character" part right). I have actually learned how to pronounce my name.

I must admit it took a while to get used to the flowing robes (I kept stepping on them and it was hot under there. I have a new respect for women in long dresses) and the hat (they asked if I minded messing my hair), but I made it through the rest of the meeting and even wore the attire to my car and back to my office. If you could have seen the look on the faces of the staff; it was priceless!

Thought I would share some pictures of this most beautiful and extraordinary life experience with you all. I think that fellow Rotarian Chip Tamar summed up my reaction perfectly:

Jim: Over the years I have come to respect you as a person who really cares about others and the way you conduct yourself with Rotary just shows it even more. Any award you receive for your caring of others is richly deserved. However, I must say that your award today was not what I would have ever had in mind. Not even close. Came from left field. Really a shocker and your look was priceless. However, this is the hand you were dealt, so ......on behalf of all of us at Silk City Calendar........CONGRATS !!!!!!!!! I would however, look into exchanging your new garb as the light blue was not making a fashion statement for you as a new Chief. - Chip Tamar

So, from now on, you can call me CHIEF!
