At a presentation this past Thursday, Paramus Rotarians learned about the Franciscan Community Development Center. In a very humble presentation by Sister Rita Licameli, she explained how the Center found a home on Anderson Avenue in Fairview, NJ.

Starting with a ramshackle garage on the grounds of Saint John the Baptist Church, this non-denominational Christian based pro-life organization reached out into Bergen County to receive help in restoring and building a place where they could offer help. Help based on respect for all faith traditions and non-discriminatory on the basis of religion.

This valiant lady outlined the problems that the Center encountered and how they have grown. Today they have about 100 sponsors including names like A & P, Arnold Bread, Entenmanns, Colonna Bros., Freihofers, Goya Foods, Lenscrafters, New York Giants, Starbucks, Wachovia, and PSE & G just to name a few. Unions, suppliers and manufacturers have assisted in donating labor, skills and material.

Aimed at the poor, the underprivileged, immigrants, women and children and the senior populations of the people of Bergen County, they have endeavored to improve the quality of life for ‘at risk’ residents. To do this, they de[end upon their sponsors and the general public to contribute in any and every way possible.

In offering breakfast, it was explained that whatever was donated that day from firms like Entenmanns, Boboli, other sponsors and local bakeries would be the main thrust of food service that morning. These people have been very generous.

If anyone would care to contribute, be it money or goods, contact the Franciscan Community Development center, 239 Anderson Ave., Fairview, NJ 07022, 201 906 1399 phone or e-mail pepper44@optonline.net. You will enable them to enhance the quality of life and dignity of each human being that enters their portals.
