Richie Havens was the starting program for the Paramus Cultural Council on Tuesday previous. This Woodstock legend appeared before a crowd numbering in the six hundreds. His admirers kept coming in droves to hear this gifted legend.
His music career began as a youngster in Brooklyn where he rallied his friends into doo-wop groups later appearing at the age of 16 with the McCrea Gospel Singers. From there he gravitated to Greenwich Village and later on of course, to Woodstock.
Interspersed with his music was a dialog aimed at his audience. He believes in preserving the ecological values of the earth and talks to his audience while performing. He has recorded over 80 songs and is not averse to formulating new songs that give expressions of his impressions. At the request of his manager, we did not take pictures or videos during the performance.
The program started with an opening act from a duo called Pender & O’Neill. If you have ever heard a band, Minus Ted, you would recognize the guitar, bass and vocal player, Brian Pender as well as Terry O’Neill who plays the mandolin and electric leads
These two played so well that they actually warmed up the audience for Richie Havens, not that he needed it.
