Bergen Museum to relocate to temporary space at Bergen Town Center/ Bergen Mall
By Press Release Wednesday, July 25, 2007, 01:33 PM EDT
The Bergen Museum’s President, Peter Knipe, announced today that the Bergen Town Center Management had notified the Museum’s Board of Trustees at the beginning of the month that they must close down the Museum’s home space on the Mall’s lower-level by July 31, 2007. The Bergen Town Center is making a smaller space available to the Museum as a temporary solution for it to continue its operations until the Center can determine a long term solution to host the Museum in the New Bergen Town Center.
The entrance to the Museum’s new space is located on the Route 4 side of the Mall next to the parking lot entrance to Marshalls. The Museum will be located on the second floor. An elevator and staircase can be taken to the second floor.
The Bergen Museum Of Art & Science celebrated its opening in the Bergen Mall in July 2003 during a ribbon cutting with Paramus Mayor James Tedesco and County Executive Dennis McNerney. The Museum during the past year has been celebrating its 50 years of continuous service to children and adults living in the communities of Bergen County and Northern New Jersey. The Museum was founded in 1956 as a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) Cultural Arts and Education organization.
In 2003 the Bergen Museum built three gallery spaces on the Lower-Level of the Bergen Mall. The Museum’s galleries, nearly 3,000 square feet, were designed with 12 feet walls that included a state of the art gallery lighting system. The space included a food service kitchen, office spaces and enough storage space to house the Museum’s permanent collection of art, crafts and regional artifacts. The original lease to the Museum was with the then owner of the Bergen Mall, Simon Properties. Soon thereafter the Mall was purchased from Simon by Vornado Realty Trust of Paramus. Shortly after Vornado Trust’s acquisition of the Mall the Museum’s lease was expanded to include an additional 5,000 square feet of adjacent space.
The Bergen Museum and Vornado Trust have maintained a strong Private/public partnership that has benefited both organizations. Vornado Realty Trust even before acquiring the Bergen Mall had donated to the Bergen Museum the world famous Alexander’s Mural an international well known art work that was on the exterior face of the Alexander Department Store building at the intersection of Route 4 and 17 in Paramus.
The Bergen Museum has attracted thousands of visitors to the Bergen Mall annually. Many of the visitors to the Museum include shopping and or eating at the Mall while visiting the Museum. The Museum has hosted dozens of events each year with attendance for certain art openings or live performances reaching above 300 attendendees.
The Museum is now planning its 6th Annual “Bergen Music & Art Festival” at the Bergen Town Center scheduled for Sunday, September 9th. The Festival has been growing each year and Vornado Realty Trust has been a principal sponsor of the Festival each year.
In 2005 the Bergen Museum named Mr. Joseph Macnow, Vornado’s CFO, Bergen County Cultural Arts Person of The Year for his continuing support of the Museum and its many programs including the Music & Art Festival.
The Museum’s President, Peter Knipe, in discussing the move into temporary space at the Mall described the move as an expected event that Vornado told the Museum would eventually happen. He said that the Board is looking forward to continuing its art classes, lectures, seminars, Tango Lessons and educational activities in the temporary space until new exhibition and gallery space is made available in the “New” Bergen Town Center. Knipe said that the inclusion of the Bergen Museum in the “New” Bergen Town Center makes the Center an even more vibrant location that serves the community the same way that a well planned “down town” serves the people of the community. He concluded by saying that the partnership that Vornado Realty Trust and the Bergen Museum has forged is a win / win for both organizations and that the surrounding communities receive an important and significant contribution from one of the communities’ most successful business members, Vornado Realty Trust.
The Museum’s First Vice President, Dorothy Nicklus, said that the Museum’s Board plans to continue to produce and host such annual programs such as the Holocaust Remembrance Program, Black History Month and Women’s History Month. She said that the Museum plans to greatly expand its education and art instruction programming In the temporary space. These programs will include art classes for school age children and adults. Other programs will include a masters class for chess players and science and math programs for students.
All local artists and crafters are invited to participate in the Bergen Museum’s 6th Annual “Bergen Music & Art festival” outdoors at the Bergen Town Center/ Bergen Mall in Paramus. The Festival’s art and craft show and sale will be held on Sunday September 9th from 10 am to 4 pm on the parking lot near the front of Century 21. Local artists and crafters will show and sell their work during a great family event in the heart of Bergen County.
The Festival will again also host a vintage car show and live music throughout the day. There will be face painting, balloons and other activities for children. Food and drinks will be sold. For more information visit the Museum’s website at www.bergenmuseum.org
Last year the 2006 Festival featured more than 70 local and regional artists and crafters and over 80 vintage and collectible cars as more than 3,500 people attended the event.
The Festival helps to promote awareness of the arts here in Bergen County and the Northern New Jersey region. The event also provides a great opportunity for artists and crafters to show and sell their work to a broad audience. This year’s Festival is sponsored among others by Bergen Town Center, Vornado Realty Trust and Optima.
