Eileen McDowell, Director of the Joseph Cipolla Paramus Senior Center has some great activities planned. While August is not an active month due to vacations, there are the usual activities scheduled. These include:
Yoga, evening Yoga, Bocci, Crafts, Friday Rap group, Bridge, Line Dancing, Pokeeno Art and Bingo. There are several Bingo sessions scheduled with food. Check the calendar at the Senior Center for times and dates.
The September lineup sees the start of computer lessons, Tai Chi and Healthy Bones, which meets under the auspices of Chris Contillo, RN, Paramus Board of Health.
Healthy Bones is a project that Christine brought to Paramus with support from the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services two years ago. It is an osteoporosis prevention class using weights and exercise to promote bone formation, flexibility and balance training. The Health Dept. loans the weights to each participant and a nurse from the department leads the classes once a week. The participants are encouraged to do the classes on their own at least one additional time each week. In addition, each week there is a short education component that includes talking about calcium and calcium suplements, hormone replacement therapy and home safety to prevent falls and their consequence -- broken bones! The problem is that the class can only fit 12 people in each class, and the response to it has been overwhelming. The third class will begin in September and there is already a waiting list for the following class, which won't begin until September
-- 2008! Healthy Bones meets at the recreation building in Petruska Park on Tuesdays.
The Board of Health is proud that the Borough has provided all the materials and the meeting space, making the class affordable and easy to access. For more information or to be added to the waiting list for 2008 call Christine Contillo at
201 265-2100 x 615.
On September 7th, the center will have an Anniversary Dance from 7 – 11 PM with DJ Ron, coffee & cake for only $5.00. On September 28, a bus will leave from Petruska Park at 10 AM bound for the Yonkers casino. Cost for the casino only is $17.00.
Mark your October calendar for a visit to see the Glenn Miller Band at the Tropicana. However, you had better hurry in to the center because there are only 6 seats available and filling rapidly.
Contact Eileen McDowell at 201 265 2100 x 664 or visit the Center at N. 93 Farview Avenue.
