KSS Architects, an award winning architectural design firm headquartered in Princeton, NJ, with an office in Philadelphia, is designing a 68,000-square-foot addition and renovation to the Scandling College Center at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
The Scandling Center was originally built to be the main dining center, yet there was very little consideration given for it to be a place for socializing. The goal of the addition and renovation is to establish Scandling as the heart of the campus by providing a variety of spaces and activities that foster interaction, relationships, and community.
“A welcoming, centralized gathering spot is crucial to encouraging and sustaining a vibrant and well-connected campus community,” said Pamela Lucas Rew, partner at KSS and Hobart and William Smith graduate. “The Scandling College Center will serve as the perfect destination point for all members of the Hobart and William Smith family.”
The project will connect the three main areas of the campus through the use of landscaping, as well as the addition of three welcoming entrances and an outdoor terrace area. The project will add 21,000 square feet of formal and informal spaces including game, meeting and multipurpose rooms as well as a lounge and café. The rooms should accommodate up to 350 people. The campus center will provide a ‘hub’ to students, a place that is front and center to the college and a place that will showcase students’ achievements while demonstrating community vitality and HWS pride.
