KSS Architects, an award winning architectural design firm headquartered in Princeton, NJ, with an office in Philadelphia, has been commissioned to design Kean University’s Nathan Weiss College of Graduate Studies. Completion is expected in 2009.
“We have a long-standing working relationship with Kean University and we are thrilled to be involved in this particular project,” says Michael Shatken, managing partner of KSS Architects.
The project’s focus is a two-story Georgian building dating back to the mid-century. Originally the site served as an elementary boys’ school, and most recently housed classrooms and offices for Kean. This unique renovation will provide a 332-seat recital hall to the existing structure as well as a new lobby, ticket booth, green room, instrument storage section, practice area, and dressing rooms.
KSS’ goal is to transform the facility into a premier recital hall. In doing that, the firm is taking the roof off of the existing auditorium and expanding its volume vertically to increase the acoustic quality of the space. In addition, the design team has added a skylight to the second-floor lobby space that has an oculus connecting the first and second floors of the lobby. This will enable natural light to enter at the second floor and extend down to the first floor lobby, providing a visual and acoustic connection between the two spaces.
