Taiwan for the UN
On Saturday, September 15th, approximately 3,000 people gathered at Dag Hammarskjöld Park across from the UN building. Dignitaries in attendance were US Representative Scott Garrett, Ambassadors Nauru and Tuvacu, Ian Williams (UNCA) and Coen Blaauw, FAPA. The reason was to protest the UN’s negative handling of Taiwan’s application to join the United Nations.

According to Coen Blaauw, this was the largest assemblage that he has seen so far including those held in Washington, DC. The speakers appealed to the UN and H. E. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General, to admit Taiwan to the United Nations citing Article 4 of the Charter of the United Nations and in compliance with rule 58 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council and rule # 134 of the rules of procedure of the General Assembly.

The application was made by Mr. Chen Shui-Bian, President of Taiwan, in July of 2007. Claiming a population of 23 million and an advocacy of the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights and peace, the Taiwanese president declared that it was a mandate from his people to seek admission to the UN. This protest was in support of that mandate.

After several hours of speeches and entertainment, the group then marched from the UN headquarters over to 42nd Street and trekked from the East River to the Hudson River and the home of the Chinese Embassy. The distance of approximately 2 miles proved no obstacle for participants of all ages. Included in the parade was pageantry supplied by the Taiwanese. There were 9 foot inflatables rolled along and passed through the air, portable statues of Taiwanese history, music and gongs and many colorful figures accompanying the group.

The New York Police Department did an outstanding job of sheperding this mass movement. To their credit, in addition to barricades and alerting vehicles, their Community Affairs personnel and uniformed police officers marched along with the group to ensure their safety.

It was a tired group that boarded the bus bound for Fairlawn, New Jersey on the return trip. Dr. Michael Yeun had entertained the passengers on the trip in; he fed them on the return voyage. Chopsticks, sushi and water were the delicacies of the day! We were all glad to get home.
