DMR Architects, region, announced that they have completed the design renovation and expansion of an existing cafeteria for the Bergen Academies in Hackensack, New Jersey

The renovated cafeteria, which will serve approximately 1,000 students, will include an expansion of the existing dining area by an additional 4,493 square feet. The existing dining area, which is 3,807 square feet, will be renovated along with the existing 3,500 square feet space on the first floor. The renovation, as well as the expansion, totals 11,800 square feet of work. The addition includes a mezzanine floor, which will be used as a senior lounge, a two-story atrium space and a complete upgrade of the food preparation and serving area.

Bergen Academy wanted their space to be architecturally expressive. The design by DMR Architects allows for natural lighting, in an effort to save on electricity, lots of maple wood, exposed steel and cool graphics for the menus. Neutral colors were chosen and the beams and columns were left visible in an effort to give the room a more youthful, collegiate and timeless feel. The food court, which is also being utilized by the culinary arts program, will now include at least five food preparatory stations including a coffee bar, hamburger station, pizza stand and salad bar.

“DMR was really able to demonstrate its creativity and bring it to life with this particular project,” stated Lloyd Rosenberg, president of DMR Architects. “We are passionate about providing our services to the educational market because we really believe in designing a building that effects students and how they learn for the better.”

DMR Architects has vast experience when it comes to designing board of education facilities as well as for K-12 and higher education. Not only have they worked on numerous projects all over New Jersey, but also in other parts of the world as well. DMR has successfully completed the Lyndhurst Youth Center and Board of Education Offices, which was built without the need for a referendum. Another project, St. Joseph’s School for the Blind in Jersey City, is extremely unique because of the attention to detail that was required in order to make the school fully functional.
