The free screening program for diabetes and hypertension will be offered again for all Paramus residents according to John Hopper, Borough Health Officer. This health prevention program will be available on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 and on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Paramus Borough Hall. Pre-registration is necessary; call the Board of Health Nurses for an appointment and dietary instructions at 201-265-2100, Ext. 618.

Persons who are over 40 years old, overweight, or related to a diabetic should be tested for diabetes once or twice a year. Those being screened are advised to refrain from alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior to testing as alcohol consumption can alter the test. Following the dietary instructions is important for the test results to be accurate.
Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick or have noticeable symptoms, but even without being aware of the changes irreparable damage to the heart and other organs can occur. Therefore, it is very important to have your blood pressure checked regularly, Hopper added. Hypertension is a treatable condition which can be monitored with the help of the Board of Health Nurses.
Board of Health President MaryAnn Siniscalchi invites residents to take advantage of these important health services.
