www.ParamusPost.com stopped in at the Charles E. Reid Library on W. Midland Ave. Greeted by Phyllis Glatzer, we discussed some old time Paramus events including having former Mayor Charlie Reid in a High School scholarship show skit. He is a good sport. In search of Catherine Eng, it was necessary to traverse the small building and to go downstairs where she was conducting a Story Hour for 3 – 5 year olds.

Interrupting the group for a few minutes, she rearranged them in a group on the floor to pose for a picture. Of course all the parents gave their approval. It being the day of Halloween, the youngsters were dressed in cute costumes and all were well behaved for this winsome story leader.

Not wanting to interrupt the class, outside in the Library the mothers filled me in on the activities in this crowded milieu. They told me that the toddlers look forward to this weekly event as do their mothers. Ms. Eng tells them stories, has them read books, sing songs, dance and do crafts. A lot of business for one person to put across and have her charges avidly accept them and yet to know all of their names.

The parents explained that some of the perks are: Intermesh with other kids, Something different, Motivated to read, Takes them away from the TV, The first step towards higher education and Separates them from their mothers.

A glance around the Library showed that like the Main Library, they could use more space.
