At the end of the month the organization throws a huge gala party for Mo Bros (guys growing MOs) and Mo Sistas (girls who love Mos) to attend and show off their Mo.
Movember, the non-profit organization that encourages men to collect sponsorships for growing a moustache during the month of November (they are starting today clean shaven) to raise funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer; a disease that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with. One way that people can participate is by registering a team or company which is exactly what New Jersey native and business owner Bernie Wilker did.
Mr. Wilker owns Alphagraphics in Paramus, NJ and has registered a Mo Team for the office, mandating that all employees shall participate. Also, joining his team are family and friends including his 5 sons, three of which live in NJ, one in NYC and one in Atlanta.
In 2003, Movember was conceived by a couple of mates having a quiet beer at the local pub. Their initial goal was to create a campaign that promoted the growth of moustaches amongst like-minded individuals while raising a small amount of money to donate to charity. The mates wanted to call attention to Prostate Cancer – 1 in 5 men will get Prostate Cancer, the same ratio for women with Breast Cancer but there is little attention drawn to the issue.
In 2004, with 450 participants, the campaign gained momentum, partnering with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) and raising $55,000.
In 2005, with 9,000 participants, the campaign raised $1.2 million for the PCFA.
Movember hits the US for the first time this year. It was conceived in Australia in 2003 and raised over $7 million, last year alone with the help of over 76,000 participants. At the end of the month the organization throws a huge gala party for Mo Teams, Mo Bros (guys growing MOs) and Mo Sistas (girls who love Mos) to attend and show off their Mo; the New York Gala will be taking place on November 27, 2007 in New York City.
