Ovarian cancer is often called the silent killer because early symptoms are frequently subtle and are easily confused with other diseases.

During the month of September, in recognition of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Maureen Fund for the Prevention and Early Detection of Ovarian Cancer at The Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), with support from the Community Resource Council (CRC) and TD North, offered women the opportunity to learn more about the disease and to determine risk factors by attending an educational conference.

The conference featured Daniel H. Smith, M.D., of Scarsdale, NY, vice chairman of The Cancer Center, chief, Gynecologic Oncology Division of The Cancer Center at HUMC. He presented “Ovarian Cancer – If Only I Had Known…,” Andre Goy, M.D., of Hackensack, deputy director of The Cancer Center, chief, Lymphoma Division and director of the Tumor Bank and Genomics Program at The Cancer Center at HUMC, presented “The Tumor Bank: Leading to a Cure.” Donna McNamara, M.D., of Park Ridge, attending, Gynecological Oncology Division of The Cancer Center at HUMC, presented “Innovations in Chemotherapy Treatment;” and Michelle Donato, M.D., of Livingston, medical director of the Blood and Bone Marrow Collection Facility Division of Stem Cell Transplantation at The Cancer Center at HUMC, presented “Tumor Vaccines.” The Maureen Fund is dedicated to prevention, earliest detection, and the cure of ovarian cancer.
