Autism Series
The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) is hosting a series of three half-day workshops to create autism awareness and help mainstream the autistic child in New Jersey school districts, created by the Education Connection Foundation, a non-profit educational organization for educators and parents. All sessions will be held in the Hekemian Conference Center at HUMC, located at 30 Prospect Avenue, Hackensack, from 8 a.m. – noon.

The third and final workshop will be held on Thursday, December 13. Irene Cook, director of Autism Programs for Pompton Lakes Public Schools, Ringwood Public Schools, and Lakeland Regional High School is presenting “ Establishing Programs for Children with Autism in a Public School Setting: Critical Needs in Planning, Implementing and Monitoring.”

The first workshop was held on Thursday, October 11. Senator Loretta Weinberg (D-37), a strong supporter of autism legislation in New Jersey, and Aaron R. Graham, Ph.D., Bergen County Superintendent of Schools, spoke at the introductory session. Additional presenters included Randye Huron, M.D., of Tenafly, chief of Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics and director of the Institute for Child Development at The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at HUMC. She presented “The Medical Diagnosis and Treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorders.” Lisa McCauley Parles, JD, director of the Center of Leadership Studies at Seton Hill University presented “The Legal Issues Concerning the Autistic Child.”

NACHRI is the foremost organization in the nation for children's hospitals. New York magazine ranked HUMC as a Best Hospital for Pediatrics, as well as being one of the Top 10 Overall Best Hospitals.
