District 7490 Rotarians may be well beyond the age of the typical Boy Scout, but they are still teaming up with local Boy Scouts to collect non-perishable food for less fortunate children, families and senior citizens in our area. According to Joe Laureni, Rotary District Governor and an Eagle Scout himself, “On April 5th, some fifty Rotary clubs in Passaic, Bergen and Hudson Counties will take part in the Boy Scouts of America’s 2008 Scouting for Food Drive.

Since 1999, the Boy Scouts have been collecting food for our neighbors in need…we are proud to add Rotary’s support and resources to this important community-based effort.” Rotarians will work side-by-side with local scout troops during the collection efforts.

The April 5th food collection will take place at local supermarkets, businesses and service organizations throughout Bergen, Hudson and Passaic Counties, with all participating food drop off points being designated by special signage. All collected food will also be delivered by scouts and Rotarians to local food pantries.

“Many people tend to loose sight of the fact that food pantries provide food all year round…not just on holidays,” Laureni added. “We need to keep the food donations coming at a steady pace to keep our neighbors fed”

Based on the credo, “Service Above Self,” Rotary District 7490 participates in many service programs including “The Gift of Life” Program which brings children from all over the world to the United States for life-saving surgery and the “Polio Plus” Program, an international Rotary-sponsored effort to eradicate polio.
