On Wednesday, February 6, the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders during their public meeting welcomed Vernon C. Walton to the Freeholder Board, marking the first time since Bergen County’s inception that an African American is a Freeholder. In this historic moment Vernon C. Walton was sworn in by Superior Court Judge Elijah L. Miller Jr.
After the ceremony Freeholder Walton thanked his family, friends, and colleagues for their continual support as he pledged to work tirelessly for Bergen County residents.
The Freeholders, along with County Executive Dennis McNerney, were elated to be part of this significant moment. Each one of them extended their congratulations and recognized the vast experience Freeholder Walton will bring to the Board.
Several supporters from the community were present and spoke on public record about the joy they felt to see Bergen County moving forward. They also thanked the newly sworn in Freeholder for taking on this new and important task.
Freeholder Walton is fulfilling the unexpired term of Connie Wagner who was elected to the Assembly this past November. He is the Senior Pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist Church of Englewood, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Ramapo College, and received his Doctor of Ministry Degree from the United Theological Seminary.
