Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney and the County’s Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs today announced that on Wednesday, February 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the county will be hosting the North Jersey Regional Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest for region 3 at the Williams Center for the Performing Arts in Rutherford.
This is the third year that students throughout the state are participating in NJ Poetry Out Loud, a program that is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with State Arts Agencies, including the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, to encourage high school students to read and interpret classic and modern poetry in a manner that lets them build self-confidence and develop public speaking skills.
“This innovative program allows students to explore poetry as an oral art form that incorporates memorization and performance, while bringing new meaning to literary works,” said McNerney.
Several counties will be represented in the contest for region 3 including Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Hudson, and Morris. Students participating in the regional contest won their high school’s Poetry Out Loud competition.
There will be two other North Jersey Regional Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contests taking place the week of February 18 at Rutgers’ Camden Center for the Arts in Camden and the Two River Theatre in Red Bank. The winners of all three regional contests will go on to the state finals at the NJN studios in Trenton, NJ. The NJ state finalist will compete in the National Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest in Washington, D.C.
In the event of inclement weather, the Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest for region 3 will be held Thursday, March 6 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
