Bergen Community College, in partnership with The Center for Alcohol and Drug Resources, will host "Under 21 and Under the Influence: An open dialogue about high risk drinking" on Thursday, March 27, 2008, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Technology Education Center, Room 128 (The Moses Family Meeting and Training Center) 400 Paramus Road, Paramus.
This conference provides an opportunity for members of the community to openly discuss the issue of underage drinking. Panelists will present a forum about the growing problem of high risk and irresponsible drinking, successes and challenges, public policy and new directions in thinking. Topics for panel and audience discussion include:
· "When Booze is in the Air!" Dr. Al Frech, a psychologist and consultant, will provide a framework for understanding the problem of high risk drinking, emerging models for prevention and intervention, and dilemmas faced by college administrations and staff in addressing the perception and the reality of high risk drinking among young adults.
· "A Community Paradigm Shift." John Kriger, President of Kriger Consulting, Inc. will talk about the Community Empowerment Mode and provide a perspective on what happens when communities utilize existing systems and infrastructures to develop a comprehensive approach to the prevention of high risk drinking.
· "Questioning Twenty-One." John McCardell, Director of Choose Responsibility, will discuss the impact of the National Minimum Legal Drinking Age Act and examine its effectiveness in establishing public policy that reflects social reality and creates a safe environment.
· "Start Talking Before They Start Drinking." Diane Litterer, Executive Director of New Jersey Prevention Network, will share the research that is guiding the Statewide Childhood Drinking Coalition and other underage drinking initiatives in New Jersey.
