What: The Suburban Gang Project, a venture launched by Bergen Community College's Center for Suburban Criminal Justice, will present three conferences on gangs in suburbia for over 750 high school students from Bergen County. The project was made possible due to a $272,600 federal grant secured by U.S. Sens. Frank Lautenberg, Robert Menendez and U.S. District 9 Rep. Steven Rothman.
When: Separate conferences will occur on three dates -Monday, March 24, 2008; Tuesday, March 25, 2008; and Friday, March 28, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ, in the Technology Education Center, Room 128 (The Moses Family Meeting and Training Center).
Who: Along with the 750 high school students who will attend the event each day, College professors, Bergen County Police and other local officers, a former gang member and the College's student peer leaders will present the challenges of gangs in suburbia and discuss the topic at length.
Why: This large gathering of high school students from across Bergen County stands as an excellent opportunity for your outlet to feature the young minds of our area. Moreover, the issue of gangs in suburbia remains a topic that has not been covered with any frequency or depth despite the fact that it remains a serious problem. Students will be interacting with officials, the College's student peer leaders and each other - the event and its topic remain a unique story, one your audience will surely be interested in hearing. The fact that a federal grant drives the project only enhances its consumer appeal. The College will arrange ample opportunities for you to speak with organizers, participants and students.
