David De Notaris
Master Motivator and Dean of Self-esteem

I first met David De Notaris at a combined tri-District Rotary meeting years ago. He was one of two fascinating main speakers. We met as he was being led through the throng by a diminutive Rotarian so that he could reach his wife, Mariann. Since they were making little headway, I dove in and cleared a passageway so that David could accomplish his goal. He was so grateful that he gave me one of his inspirational tapes.

We stayed in contact after that with David appearing at several Rotary Clubs in District 7490 and giving a talk. I attended al of them! Over the years, we drifted apart; it took Sheriff McGuire's naming an eleven year old blind child as Sheriff for a Day for me to remember my astonishing friend. The years did not diminish our friendship.

A nationally known speaker, a best selling author, a world champion athlete, David has been blind from birth. He was born with a rare eye condition Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). The “experts” insisted that David's life was hopeless, but David's family had other ideas! "My family, educators and coaches provided me with the proper information and inspiration for me to overcome the challenge of blindness."

David is now living in Hershey, PA along with Mariann and the kids He accepted the job as Director for the Pennsylvania State Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services in Harrisburg, and has been there for 6 months.

One of the stories David told about himself is how he painted his room at college. He wanted to do it, he did it! Painted himself as well, but painted the room sky blue. He says: "You have heard people say they are waiting for their ship to come in. Don't wait for your ship to come in .. .. swim out to it."

David De Notaris is that kind of a guy! I am proud to call him friend.
