Paramus to hold free rabies clinic

The Paramus Board of Health will conduct its free rabies immunization clinic for dogs and cats according to John Hopper, Borough Health Officer, on Monday, May 5th (dogs only) and Tuesday, May 6th (cats only) from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The clinic will be held at the Life Safety Building on Carlough Drive.

Rabies vaccination with a three year duration of immunity will be used. However, dogs and cats which are less than twelve months of age and those with no previous history of vaccination will require re-immunization one year later. All pets must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs must be on a leash and cats must be in a carrying container.

This program is basically for all newly licensed dogs and cats and all pets whose last rabies shots were in 2005. However, the State Health Department has recommended that despite the three year duration of immunity for the vaccine, that pet owners are
advised to bring their animals back to be revaccinated every two years instead of every three years. This will ensure a good overlap in immunity and prevent pet owners from missing the three year revaccination date and having the pet’s vaccination expire.
State law makes rabies vaccination of dogs and cats mandatory prior to the issuance of a license.

Board of Health President, Sharon Hayo, urges all residents to take advantage of this free clinic for the sake of the health of our families and our pets.
