April is National Autism Month and the Alpine Learning Group in Paramus greeted it by giving their first published book on how to employ individuals with autism to Speaker of the NJ Assembly Joseph Roberts. Dr. Bridget Taylor, Executive Director, welcomed Roberts along with Senator Loretta Weinberg and Assemblywomen Joan Voss and Connie Wagner.

While they all got up to talk, Joan Voss was able to speak from personal experience. Linda Fiddle of the Daniel J. Fiddle Foundation, an organization whose mission is "to award grants to residential, recreational, vocational, educational and family programs that enrich the lives of adolescents and adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)", was there to welcome and introduce the honored guests. It was through a generous grant from the Fiddle Foundation that the Information and Training Manual was developed.

It was this manual that was presented to Roberts, Weinberg, Voss and Wagner.

The manual describes to the employer the pleasures and pitfalls of hiring someone with Autistic Spectrum Disorder with pleasures being more predominate. While each 'employee' is different in nature, a 'job coach' helps them to learn the tasks and to know when to allow the employee to go it alone.

Some of the jobs they do are: sorting mail, collecting recycling,, feeding and caring for animals, photocopying, filing, scanning, sorting, maintenance and cleaning shelves. Not all tasks are menial, most are supervised by their job coach as they get started. One might say 'Help is on the way!'

Some of the sites one can go to in order to learn are: www.alpinelearninggroup.org - www.asatonline.org - www.autismresearch.org - www.autismspeaks.org and www.djfiddlefoundation.org . There are many more.

Alpine is having a heir 5th Annual David Cronin Memorial Golf Outing honoring Milton E. Kahn, CPA on Monday, June 9, 2008 at the Hackensack Golf Club. For information call 201 612 7800 or access www.alpinelearninggroup.org Meet the Challenge!
