Save our Wetlands - Update
By Mel Fabrikant Monday, April 07, 2008, 05:56 AM EDT
It’s been quite some time since our last update. Although “no news is good news”, we thought that we should let you know that we have not given up; the fight to save Soldier Hill rages on! As you are all aware, the Borough of Paramus filed a lawsuit against the property owner/developer (Shamrock Creek/JDME Acquisitions). A lot of legal work (depositions, document review, etc.) has been ongoing and the case is scheduled to continue tomorrow morning (Monday, April 7, 2008) before Judge Harris in Bergen County Superior Court. We are hoping that the court reaffirms that this is NOT buildable land and that steps are then taken to protect this property so nobody has to travel this road ever again.
While it seems clear that the intent was to leave this area in its natural state and prohibit any development on this environmentally sensitive parcel, it is possible that the judge may not rule on this matter. The case could be directed toward the Paramus Zoning Board of Adjustment for further review. If this proves to be the case we will let you know and will request that people show up in force to voice their concerns and opposition at meetings and/or hearings.
Profit appears to be the main, if not only, motive. Land (35 acres) that was purchased for $90,000 could be flipped for millions if approvals are granted. Millions more could be made if the developer is given the green light to build an over-sized, high density project. Those wishing to profit from “Enchantment at Paramus” have initiated a publicity campaign, attempting to sway public opinion and explain why they should be allowed to build in an area that has already been developed. Warning signs still ring the property and health concerns and other dangers have been cited. While they have gone through great lengths to highlight these risks they will not do a thing unless given approval to build and make money. If given this opportunity they will more than likely promote it as a safe place to live to any of the prospective buyers looking to purchase one of their 144 age restricted units. If denied, as should be, we believe that they will do all in their power to walk away.
Please do not fall for the hype and propaganda. It is our opinion that building in this area is wrong and that the negatives clearly outweigh any benefits. We will continue to do our best to keep up to date and keep you informed. We ask that you stay involved and continue to say NO to Enchantment at Paramus. If you have any questions or would like to learn more feel free to give us a call or send an e-mail.
We thank you for your assistance and look forward towards your continued support!
