BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE INITIATES THE COLLABORATIVE ARTS PROJECT: Synchronicities
One of the most innovative models of technological collaboration is Internet2, a research and development consortium led by over 200 US universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications.

Its function is to promote and create global stages, enable remote instruction, allow participatory discovery, and open access to rich collections of media. It redefines how we create, teach, perform and collaborate. Synchronicities: Internet 2 Collaborative Arts Project is a collaborative effort involving New York University (NYU), University of California at Irvine (UCI), and Bergen Community College (BCC).

It joins both East and West coast uniting the two tiers of education, namely the community college sector with two four-year universities. The project will include trial runs and experiments with set-up of the Internet 2 technology among NYU, UCI, and BCC. Dancers and musicians from the three locations will collaborate to create a student and faculty presentation of music, dance and art. Held in the media center, and using large projection screens for each site, the final performance involves a collaborative improvisation with pre-determined music and movement. The collaboration offers community college students the opportunity to work with students from four-year universities. It also sets the stage for new curriculum development articulated between the participating colleges by means of telematic courses.

From the East coast, the people involved in this project include: Linda Marcel, Andy Krikun, and Dr. John Gilbert. Linda Marcel, Ed.D. is a Professor of Music and music coordinator at Bergen Community College. She is the director of the Synchronicities: Internet 2 Collaborative Arts Project. In speaking about the project, Dr. Marcel says that, “Internet2 is one of the most significant projects today, fostering an amalgamation between the Arts and Technology. It is a model for institutional collaboration and will set a standard in arts performance and education during the 21st century.” Andy Krikun, Assistant Professor of Music at Bergen Community College and an NYU Doctoral student. He is a co-director of Ars Nova and Ars Electronica with Dr. Marcel. The performances incorporate interactive technology and modern dance performances. Professor Krikun says that "Internet 2 offers us an exciting opportunity to use technology to cross barriers of geography and culture instantaneously to explore new artistic frontiers." Dr. John V. Gilbert is currently teaching in The Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions at New York University. For over a decade, he has been a pioneer of Internet2 and a driving force behind institutional collaborations in America.

The West coast educators involved in this project are Lisa Marie Naugle, Ph.D. and John Crawford from University of California at Irvine. John Crawford, Assistant Professor of Dance and Media Arts is a media artist, interactive performance/technology, director, and interaction designer. He uses computers and video to create painterly animations and motion graphics integrated with dance. He originated the Active Space concept to describe his interactive performance systems that produce visuals and music in response to movement. Dr. Naugle, Associate Professor at University of California at Irvine, teaches modern dance technique, choreography and improvisation. She is active in dance-technology, video dance, telematic performance, and Active Space technology. The performance for Synchronicities is set for April 10 and 11th, 2007 in the West Hall Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. It promises to be an innovative and exciting performance.
