Four one-act plays written by seven local middle and high school students have won the sixteenth annual Bergen Community College “Young Playwrights of Bergen County Festival” playwriting competition. The winning entries – comedies and dramas – will be performed Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. in the Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre at the College, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus. Directed by Bergen professor Mary Clifford, the plays will feature acting students from the College. The performances are open to the public; admission is free.
Scheduled for the evening’s performances:
“Allegra’s Revenge” – a comedic murder mystery with more than a dozen zany characters;
“Don’t Push It” – the story of a middle school girl whose science project – a time machine – could change the course of human life;
“Gray Morality” – a teenage pregnancy drama;
“The Spring Ahead” – the story of a struggling songwriter who refuses to give up chasing her dream.
Festival organizers received over 80 scripts from area students in grades three through 12. Along with the four winning entries, eight plays received honorable mention recognition. An awards ceremony honoring the winners will precede the May 31 performances.
The winning entries came from schools including Dumont High School (Dumont), Fort Lee High School (Fort Lee), River Dell High School (River Dell) and Thomas Jefferson Middle School (Fair Lawn).
