SONG FOR PICKLES and THE LARRY GELB SONGBOOK, VOLUME I, AT Borders Books
Composer, lyricist and pianist who introduced I’ll Remember Love The Larry Gelb Songbook Volume I is now expressing his wonderful talent through jazz. The new jazz album entitled Song for Pickles is a compilation of twelve great new tunes composed by Larry Gelb. “Pickles”, a funky bossa is a track dedicated to the Gelb’s Jack Russell Terrier Pickles to commemorate her on her journey from Arkansas to New Jersey on the puppy bus, which was written in 60s Blue Note style.
Song For Pickles is classic 60’s jazz quartet music with beautiful solos by Dick Oatts on flute/tenor/soprano/and alto sax, Matt Wilson on drums and Cameron Brown on bass creatively add to the almost orchestral texture of the groups interaction. Broadway vocalist Amy Justman sings on several tracks with lyrics. Oatts' solos range from Rollinesque on “ON THE HUDSON” to Shorterish on “WALTZ FOR MADAME” CHALOFF to spiritual Coltrane on “THE CAVE OF MACH PALEH.” On “THE HONEYMOONERS NOW” 'track Mr. Gelb plays a swinging Sonny Clarkish-Ed Nortonish piano solo.
Larry Gelb has released a 26-song compilation of some of his most trenchant, witty, and soulful songs in The Larry Gelb Songbook, Volume I essentially a return to American standards. The full release was recorded at Bennett Studios in Englewood, New Jersey. Gelb started playing the piano at age seven. Today, he has written over 800 songs, including work for film scores, musicals, jingles and jazz compositions.
In the tradition of his heroes Rodgers and Hart, Harold Arlen and Jimmy Van Heusen, Larry Gelb is writing songs with real melodies and intelligent lyrics. The new CD I'll Remember Love-The Larry Gelb Songbook Volume I includes 26 songs performed by Broadway's brightest new vocalists Kelly J. Grant (National tour of “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Show Boat”), Paul Binotto (“Dreamgirls” and “Hair”), Laura Jordan, David Perlman (Performed in theaters worldwide), Amy Justman (“Company!” and “The Screams of Kitty Genovese”) and Kyle Bradford (“Damn Yankees” and “The Padre”).
The focus track on the new release is "The Blood of America" a timely song that was inspired by Gelb for the Troops in Iraq and the families directly affected by the war- "and it's the blood that flows through each American's veins" -an emotional and uplifting song that Gelb is donating to the troops and their families via online and cd samplers.
