HUMC Honors Emergency Responders

HUMC Honors Emergency Responders Hackensack University Medical Center honored numerous emergency responders from various Bergen County organizations at an Awards Dinner held at the Stony Hill Inn in Hackensack.

Paramus Rescue Squad honored Jerry Schwartz, a 45 year dedicated volunteer. William “Jerry” Schwartz joined Paramus CD DC (Civilian Defense) in June of 1962. Jerry started his emergency service career in Communications, and quickly was transferred to Paramus Rescue Squad. It became quite evident of his leadership qualities, and he has held various ranks as an officer during his career.
In 1979 he became Captain of the Paramus Rescue Squad, and this position was quickly elevated to the rank of Chief. Jerry has the distinct honor of being the first Rescue Chief in the Borough of Paramus, a position he held until 1993. His leadership of 14 years saw the development of the Paramus Rescue Squad into one of the best Rescue Squads in the Nation. In 1990, under Jerry’s direction as Captain of the Paramus Rescue Extrication Team, the team gained International fame by winning the Unlimited Category at the International Rescue and Emergency Care Association Vehicle Rescue competition in Florida. This started the long running competitive learning experience, which continues today with Jerry as a member of the team.

Jerry is a licensed electrical contractor by trade, operating a successful business until he was appointed the Director of the Bergen County EMS Training Center after the untimely death of his friend Bob Chais. In that position he is responsible for all Medical, Rescue and Hazardous Materials training in the county. Jerry has responsibility for two (2) training sites, which trains about 50% of the EMT’s in the State of New Jersey. He has countless volunteer instructors and a staff of over 60 which he overseas.

Jerry’s life is in the Emergency Service field. Administration, instruction, guidance and participating. His commitment to the town he serves as a volunteer and the County he serves as his career makes him a great candidate of this prestigious award from Hackensack University Medical Center.
